CURRICULUM

LANGUAGE ARTS - READING

Our Reading Series, is published by Houghton Mifflin, and is standards-based.  Instruction in Language Arts begins with core literature selections centered around a theme and expands into systematic instruction in reading strategies, phonics and word analysis, comprehension, spelling, language skills, writing and grammar.  Lessons within each unit are designed to teach appropriate skills within the content of the reading selections.  This program provides the core literature selections intended to be used by all second grade students.

In addition, many related literature selections at various reading levels, will be used to practice reading.  To assure that each child will be able to work up to their potential, learning groups will be established to meet specific needs.  These guided reading groups will provide each child the individual attention they need in order to become fluent readers.  They will be instructed to use strategies that will assist them in gaining meaning and independence in their reading.

LANGUAGE ARTS - WRITING

Daily writing is an important part of this program.  The children will learn many different forms of writing… stories, paragraphs, friendly letters, reports, poems.  They will also write for different purposes… to ask for information, to express feelings, to summarize what they have learned.  Some of their writing will be done in the social studies or other subject areas.  The children will learn to write for different audiences… other children, themselves, and you. We will talk about good writing and observe writing in books we read.  The children will learn to edit their writing to improve word usage and mechanics.  Important selections (not everything they write) will go through several drafts as the students polish their writing for publication in some way.  This writing will be evaluated for improvement and growth.   Do encourage neatness… so that your child may develop a sense of quality and pride in his/her work.

SPELLING

Our Spelling program is an integral part of our reading series from Houghton Mifflin.  Core word lists are developed around  specific sound patterns.  In Spelling your child will be taught to apply the decoding/phonics skills he/she is learning.  Bonus words reinforce the spelling conventions as well as provide enrichment for more able spellers.

On most Mondays, the students will be introduced to the spelling words we will study that week.  They will also receive a study list of the core words and bonus words to take home.  PLEASE LOOK FOR THIS LIST ON MONDAYS.  The weekly spelling test will be given each FRIDAY.  Some students need more help in this area than others.  Please help your child study at home on a daily basis, if needed, so that he/she may be successful on their weekly spelling test.

HANDWRITING

This year your child will be using the Slingerland method when printing.  This method stresses the correct formation of lower case letters and provides an easy transition to cursive handwriting, which is taught in third grade.  By using the enclosed chart you can help your child practice printing at home, as well as monitor the printing in his/her daily work.  Please help your child with letters he/she may not be making correctly.

In addition to learning the correct way to make letters, the students will learn about HOW their papers should look.  They will be taught about headings on papers, margins, good spacing, and writing words and numbers neatly using the lines on their papers as guides.

"HOW"  MY  PAPER  SHOULD  LOOK!

MATH

Our Math series is from the Harcourt Publishing Company. Harcourt Math provides instruction focused on key skills found in the California State Standards. The standards are specific for all grade levels, kindergarten through high school, and are organized by the following five strands:

Number Sense: developing number concepts, computation, numeration (systems of writing numbers), and estimation.

Algebra and Functions: solving mathematical equations and inequalities.

Measurement and Geometry: studying space and figures in space; using measurement tools.

Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability: collecting data and displaying it in various ways, calculating simple averages, and performing probability experiments.

Mathematical Reasoning: explaining concepts, solving problems and puzzles, understanding formulas, and justifying results in all areas of mathematics.

BASIC MATH FACTS

The second grade math standards are based on the premise that students have already memorized basis addition and subtraction facts. If your student has not yet memorized these facts, this should become one of your first priorities at home. We will provide daily drills to increase speed and accuracy in this area (MAD MINUTES).  Your help (with flash cards) will assist your child to become more proficient in this area.

HISTORY / SOCIAL SCIENCES

The History/Social Sciences program is published by Scott Foresman.  The program was written specifically for California and provides comprehensive coverage of the Standards in a unique way. All instruction is organized by the Standards: each Standard is the focus of a lesson.

SCIENCE

The second grade science program is published by Harcourt Publishing Company and is standards based.  The students will learn about using the scientific process by Observing, Classifying, Comparing and contrasting, and Measuring and recording.  The content is organized into the following four strands: Life Sciences; Earth Sciences; Physical Sciences; and Investigation and Experimentation.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The second grade P.E. program is based on the performance of specific skills, appropriate for this age level. The school district has determined the grade level expectancies for this area.

ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS

Rios folders with labeled pockets have been provided for each student.  (Replacement folders can be purchased in the school office for 50 cents.)  This folder plays an important part in helping your child manage school papers and develop responsibility.  This folder is used to take home all corrected papers, homework assignments, and special notices and should be returned to school each day.  Organizational skills are taught at every grade level at Rios.  The pocket folders are used at the kindergarten, first, and second grade levels.

THREE-RING NOTEBOOKS ARE NOT USED UNTIL THIRD GRADE AND SHOULD NOT BE SENT TO SCHOOL.

In order to help your child develop these organizational skills, we would appreciate your assistance throughout the year in the following ways:

  1. Each evening, check to be sure your child brought a folder home.
  2. Find a special place to keep the folder in your home.  (A place near the door would help your child to remember to take the folder back to school in the morning.)
  3. Look at the contents of the folder.  Examine notices and completed papers with your child (in the TAKE HOME pocket) and any homework that needs to be done for the next school day (in the BRING BACK pocket).
  4. When your child has completed the homework assignment, have your child place the assignment in the BRING BACK pocket of the folder and put the folder in its special place.
  5. Remind your child to take the folder to school the next morning.

HOMEWORK

Our Rios homework policy requires approximately 15-20 minutes of homework Monday through Thursday for second grade.  This homework includes nightly reading in addition to practice of skills learned in class. Monthly HOMEWORK FOLDERS provide you with a record of these assignments and due dates.  PLEASE BE SURE YOUR CHILD RETURNS THIS FOLDER TO SCHOOL EACH DAY.  It should be placed in the BRING BACK pocket of the RIOS FOLDER.  Full credit will be given only for those assignments completed neatly and returned on time.  On those occasions when your child is not able to complete an assignment, a note from you would be appreciated.

REPORT CARDS

There are three reporting periods during the school year.  A parent conference will be scheduled with you for the first report.  Our report card will reflect your child's progress toward meeting state standards.  New skills are introduced throughout the year and each report card will reflect the skills that were covered during that reporting period.  Satisfactory progress is considered to be a minimum score of at least 70% on assignments and tests.  Students who do not meet these expectancies will receive extra help. You may be asked to assist your child at home in areas where he/she may be having difficulty.  We will be happy to help you help your child.

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE

We believe that learning takes place best in a positive, orderly environment.  We expect students to respect the rights of others and practice self-control, so that all students may be productive in the classroom.  You and your child have been informed of our classroom rules along with the resulting consequences for not following the rules.  Every effort is made to reinforce the classroom rules in a positive manner.  We appreciate your support in helping your child develop these important life-long skills.
